Renton is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 26,681 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Renton were missionaries in the early 1800s and they named it "Nisqually" because of an abundant wetland area near present-day Renton Boulevard and Nisqually River. In 1853, John Sibley built the first school in what is now Renton. In 1855, Territorial Governor Isaac Stevens appointed Prentice Mifflin as the manager of Indian Affairs for Western Washington Territory, which included much of today's King County. Mifflin recommended that Renton be established as a town. The first postmaster was Elijah Phelps and mail started arriving from Tacoma on April 15, 1861. The first store was built by George Hildebrandt on land purchased from J[ohn] C[hristopher] . . . In 1865, A[lbert] Davenport became postmaster and he developed a pipeline to supply water to customers south of town into Puget Sound. This caused major development around town with churches, schools, businesses and homes being erected over time; many remain standing today including First Baptist Church (1901), Methodist Episcopal Church (1896), American Legion Post No. 25 (1915), and Kinko’s Coffee & Donuts (1983). In 1907–08,[2] new brick school buildings were constructed on hills east of town across Northwest Highway from what is now CenturyLink Field soccer fields; these are still in use today as classrooms for students at nearby Roy Rogers School District #1 elementary school which opened in 1957 adjacent to CenturyLinkField Soccer Fields complex (originally called “Century Link Park”). Renton also saw heavy development during World War II with 3 large airfields being established here: Andersen Air Force Base (), Boeing Airplane Plant () and Helendale Army Airfield (). All three facilities have been closed down or mothballed since then but their memories live on through various public works projects associated with those airports such as Overlook Way diversionary pool & tunnel project (), Everett Airport expansion project (), Kenmore Square interchange Project (); Snohomish County government airport access ramps project (); Northsound Aviation Heritage Center ()); Beacon Hill Interchange (); KeyArena redevelopment project ().
