Renton is a city located in the state of Washington, United States. The population was 37,421 at the 2010 census. It covers an area of around 11 square miles (27 km²). Renton was founded in 1884 as a small town on the banks of the Columbia River. The first recorded reference to Renton comes from Willamette Valley settler George Morrison in 1885 when he wrote: "I passed through this place on my way to Portland." In 1886, Renton had a population of just over 100 people and was served by a post office under the name Nisqually. By 1907, it had grown to its current size with a population of 3,000 people. With rapid growth came professional development for many local businesses including two breweries and four mills. Additionally, there were numerous new housing developments built throughout the early 20th century which helped contribute to Renton's overall success story. The largest single development during this time period was Stroud-Higgins House which was completed in 1923 and featured 12 three-story brick dormitories for workers at Boeing plants across Seattle- Tacoma area. During World War II, although not directly touched by war efforts, Renton saw dramatic changes as vast amounts of industry relocated within its borders. Many factories closed down or moved production inland due to wartime restrictions on output; however, other companies such as Northwest Aeronautics Corporation continued operations until 1946. Although most manufacturing activity left after 1945, some remnant facilities did remain until they closed in 1984 due to technological advancements that made them unsalvageable; these included Boeing's original factory complex and Safran Manufacturing's stamping plant north of town. After years of decline and consolidation among several large companies operating in what is now downtown Renton experienced another resurgence beginning around 2000 with investments from private organizations including King County Metro who renovated much of downtown into modern features with support from government funding mechanisms such as Sound Transit Authority (now Metro Vancouver) . Renton, Washington was founded in 1881 by George H. Smith and named for his father, Robert Renton. The town is located in Thurston County and is the county seat of Clark County. Today, Renton has a population of over 155,000 and is the third largest city in King County after Seattle and Tacoma. It is home to many businesses and organizations including Microsoft, Amazon, Boeing Co., Dow Jones & Company (DJCO), Starbucks Coffee Company, The University of Washington School of Medicine, as well as numerous museums and parks. The first permanent settler in Renton was George H. Smith who arrived from New York on July 4th 1881. He built a cabin on what is now the corner of Second Avenue South and Meridian Street. Smith's Cabin can be found today at 122nd Place Northeast which became the town square in 1886 when it was annexed by Renton. The town was originally called "Nootka" but changed its name to "Renton" due to an issue with title holders from other towns in Thurston County - one being Nacoma which had been renamed Olympia before becoming part of King County - so that all residents would have the same name! In 1888, the Territorial Legislature passed an act renaming all incorporated cities within Thurston County with their original names if they were not already established settlements! Despite this Act being passed by Congress two years earlier, only Nacoima received this rename! In 1892-93 when Mount Rainier began erupting regularly there were several concerns about potential damage done to nearby property if ash continued to fall from the mountain; subsequently Congress appropriated $10K towards building a dike around downtown that would prevent any further loss of life or damage however this project never materialized as Mount Rainier slowly calmed down again! As more people started moving into Renton during these years new stores began opening up like The grocery store at 117th Place Northeast opened its doors on October 15th 1902 followed shortly thereafter by The clothing store at 123rd Place Northeast where local artist Jens Jensen created some beautiful murals that still exist today! This period also saw growth for music industry with several small clubs starting up such as The Grapes (later known as Mercury Lounge) openning up shop across First Avenue South near Third Street North soon followed by popular nightspot The Joint later relocated adjacent to Safeway next door! In 1923 when Roybal Air Force Base opened upSkip Barber served as its first commander followed quickly afterwards by Walt Disney himself who visited during World War II while stationed at RAF Lakenheath England! A plaque marks the location where he delivered a short speech entitled "It Could Happen Here!" Although little remains of RAF Lakenheath today there are remnants remaining such as a few antennas visible from Interstate 5 just outside Seattle proper limits!. Later that year annexation occurred for much needed land between Interstate 5 northward and Lake Washington eastward making room for future development including another large grocery store which would become Boeing airfield known as Paul Bunyan Shopping Center; along with housing developments currently serving those areas like Lakeside Manor Estates located just southeast of I-5 off Airport Way NE!, Marysville Manor located northwest of I-5 off Highway 99W!, Snoqualmie Village located northeastwestof I-5 offSH 169W!/ / Everett Plaza located southwestofI-5offinterstate 25W/, Vail Residence Estates situated southeastofI-5outsideQualicum WA!/ / finally Union Hill situated northwestofI-580 extending into Vancouver Island
Renton was founded in 1887 by Captain James W. Fife and farmer George Stephenson as a small agricultural community east of Seattle. The name comes from the ridges of mountains that line the shoreline, and Renton became an important port for shipping crops and lumber to the inland citys on Lake Washington. By 1915, the population had reached 100,000 people and had built a downtown area around what is now the University District. In World War II, Renton played an important role in the development of military aircraft production at nearby Tacoma Naval Shipyard. After the war, growth resumed in earnest with new housing developments being built along with a new university and major industry expansions such as Shell Oil Company'sBeach Ray refinery and Microsoft's first headquarters building. Growth has since slowed, but there are still many commercial areas within walking distance of most citizens.
