Renton, Washington was founded in 1881 by James H. Cook as the town of Renton on the east side of Tacoma Bay. In 1959, it became the city of Renton. The population was 71,993 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in what is now Renton was Capt. George Vancouver who arrived in 1792 and named his new land Battleground Point after a battle he fought with the natives near present-day Seattle. After Captain Vancouver's death, his family sold Battleground Point to John Jacob Astor for $7000 in 1807. In 1881, when James H. Cook sailed from Tacoma to take possession of what would become Renton, he selected this location as the site for his new town because it had a deep harbor and good trade potential due to its wooded surroundings and abundant fishing grounds off Tacoma Bay. At that time only about 100 people lived in what is now Renton proper; most were fishermen or farmers who did not own land but rented from local Native Americans or bought access to tidal rivers and lakes which supplied their needs for food, shelter and trade goods. In spite of having few residents and little development taking place until after World War II when oil exploration began operations in southeast Washington state (then called Puget Sound), there are several interesting stories associated with early Renton days like: In 1903 an oil well discovered near today's downtownSeattle went dry; manual labor was used to drill into undrinkable solid shale so that gasoline could be produced; workers stopped working when they learned that drilling fluid had been spilled nearby making them vulnerable to attack by Sioux Indians living on priority reservations west of Seattle; operators managed to find another well within weeks despite this danger - one that yielded gas enough to light up Sounders Stadium! ; during Prohibition all alcohol production ceased except for distillery operations run by two civic groups which made a profit selling alcoholic beverages tax free; between 1925-1927 an electric streetcar line ran through downtown providing transportation for jobs along First Avenue North then across Interstate 5 northward before terminating at hills northeast of downtown where passengers alighted at a stop on Hudson Street SE
