Renton is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 26,871 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of King County. The name "Renton" originated from the phrase "the place where they caught the salmon." The City of Renton was incorporated on November 14, 1898 as part of the Snohomish County merger which created King County. At its incorporation it had a population of 2,912 people and consisted of just two blocks of land north of what is now CenturyLink Field. In 1907 when Snohomish County lost its charter to become a state Colony due to lack of support from residents, Renton's only option was to secede and join other counties in taking this step. In 1912 voters approved an act that granted city status to Renton and renamed it for Admiral David Caird Richardson USN (1862-1936), one of Seattle's early boosters and Mayor from 1923 until 1929. Richardson helped create Seattle's first zoning ordinance in 1916 that regulated land use within downtown boundaries; he also served as mayor during World War II before his death in 1936. After his death the city passed an ordinance establishing regulations governing business licenses and hours without his input or consent. He is buried at Lake View Cemetery in Seattle with many other notable Seahawks including Norm Van Brocklin and Dick Butkus

In response to this decline in population and economic activity, Mayor Greg Nickels announced plans for significant redevelopment in 2007-2008 which included the construction of new housing developments as well as retail space for local businesses. This redevelopment has led to increased traffic congestion on nearby Interstate 5 and created some new challenges for residents: increased noise levels from vehicle traffic; limited access to outdoor recreation opportunities; and difficulty finding parking near shopping centers or other large businesses that have closed since 2008. Since then there has been renewed interest in developing downtown Renton – including proposals for a mixed-use development including commercial and residential spaces – but progress has been slow due to lack of funding support and ohido opposition from preservationists who argue that such development would further destroy valuable historic homes while creating more high-density housing closer to urban services instead of rural values. In 2013 mayor Nickels announced his plan for incremental renewal (a process which will eventually result in full reworking) which would see many vacant buildings replaced with market rate units while also increasing pedestrian access along I5 corridor
Renton was founded in 1881 as a small, agricultural town on the east side of Issaquah River. It grew rapidly during the next few decades, becoming one of the largest and most important cities in Washington County. The city's population reached over 100,000 by 1910 and 200,000 by 1920. In 1931, Renton became an incorporated municipality with a charter that defined it as "the home of Renton School District No. 3." The city continued to grow throughout the 1930s and 1940s, reaching its peak population size of 350,000 in 1950. However, during World War II the city declined due to lack of military production and wartime rationing; its population fell below 100,000 for the first time in history only in 1960.During peacetime Renton experienced a period of growth which saw it reach 250,000 residents by 1970. However, this growth ended abruptly when King County announced plans to build Issaquah Valley Regional Airport (I-5) near Renton - this led to large numbers of people commuting into neighbouring Seattle for work or entertainment purposes. This decline in economic activity began to reverse in the early 1990s and has been continuing since; at present there is little indication that Renton will experience sustained high levels of development until well into the 21st century
