Renton is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 30,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of King County and the home to Renton Stadium. The name "Renton" is derived from the Klondike Gold Rush era efforts of settlers in this area. The first permanent settler in what is now Renton was George Fox who arrived on June 4, 1853, during what would become known as the Oregon Trail gold rush. He named his new town after his former shipmates on the ill-fated trail - John A. Bulkley and James C."Deacon" Hudson - both of whom died within weeks of each other near present-day Seattle on July 24, 1853 while out exploring that part of Oregon which became Washington Territory. In 1870, Renton's post office reopened after having been closed for over two years due to railroad construction adjacent to town center; it had long been an important stop along the Puget Sound Railway (now Amtrak). At that time, much of what are now Renton neighborhoods were still unincorporated rural land belonging to local farmers and ranchers. The town began rapid growth following incorporation as a municipality on November 3, 1912; at its peak population numbering 1001 residents (including 585 women), it consisted primarily of small businesses and single-family homes clustered around its central square and two churches/synagogues located east and west of it on Commercial Street. Growth continued through World War I when many jobs went away due to conflict in Europe; during that time also came dramatic expansion into newer neighborhoods such as Pioneer Heights eastward across Interstate 5 then northward up State Route 99 until reaching today's eastern edge just south of Maple Ridge Road/SR 520 with a population estimate above 3000 by 1920 according to one report An aerial view dated 1936 shows about 3600 housing units built since 1912 including 6000 apartments or more In recent years there have been few changes except for an increase in intensity (and density) around Central Square with some new development going along Commercial Street between US 1st Avenue NE and SR 520th Ave NW
