Redmond, Washington was founded in 1846 by Captain George Vancouver and the town was named for him. The first post office in Redmond was established on December 4, 1847. In 1875, Redmond became an incorporated municipality and a blacksmith shop was built near the corner of First Street and Waynimoota Avenue. In 1896, a brick church, called Mount Calvary Presbyterian Episcopal Church (now part of Seattle’s Cathedral Basilica), was dedicated in honor of St. John’s Episcopal Church which had been destroyed by fire two years earlier. In 1907, Redmond celebrated its centennial with a parade down First Street which featured floats made from Indian artifacts seized during World War I along with memorabilia from the town’s history including a replica cannon from Ft. Lewis National Monument and examples of oldgrowth Douglas fir trees dating back to before Europeans arrived in what is now Redmond
