Redmond is bordered by Seattle to the north and east, Bellevue to the south and west, and Tacoma to the northwest. Redmond is named after John Redmond who donated land for a town in 1851. The first settler in what would become Redmond was James Morrison who built his house on the same lot as current day's Microsoft headquarters on Mercer Street in 1853. In 1863 Jameson Hays purchased 640 acres of land from John Redmond for $10 per acre which included much of present-day Redmond. In 1865 Hays founded the Territorial School District No. 1 which later became King County School District #1. Redmond was incorporated as a city on February 15, 1907. It gained its current name from John Averill Moody III who donated $200 to purchase 100 acres (40 hectares) of land just east of downtown that would be used as a site for new public school buildings and office space for the CitySchools system he had started up in Seattle two years earlier. The city had been planning to rename itself "Moody" until it decided on "Redmond" because it sounded moreSeattle-like than "Moody." Moody also donated money towards building an intrastate water main system which helped make this possible; when completed in 1909 it became one of only three cities in America without regular telephone service (the others being Omaha and Tulsa). The early days were difficult but full of promise for Redmond with its growing population and burgeoning businesses such as Microsoft Corporation where employees worked side-by-side with local farmers producing their own food products such as applesauce or potatoes at their farms off Mercer Street between North Capitol Hill Avenue and First Avenue Northwest before going into work each morning at 10am followed by lunchtime at 2pm then back home again until 6pm then dinner time before working another 12 hours straight until completing their night shift starting at 7am next day! This schedule allowed workers plenty of time for recreation including playing golf or tennis outside during off hours while their families took care of things like cooking dinner or taking care of children if they were home sick etcetera etcetera! This lifestyle changed when computers came along; now instead many people are either working long hours all week long or have shorter days where they spend most nights/days living elsewhere within walking distance (and sometimes even closer!) In 1956 Microsoft VC Paul Allen bought 295 acres adjacent to today's Redmond campus from Canadian businessman Jock Gardiner Fuldt for $5 per acre making him one of America's first billionaires outside Wall Street banks! Allen soon turned his attentions towards improving what had originally been farmland so that it could support large numbers of people with more housing available nearby making Green Valley Road into an arterial road suitable for buses which served central business district residents including students going to University College along South Union Street then continuing down East Capitol Hill Avenue northeast towards Pioneer Square before turning northwest onto SW Noble St., becoming oneof Seattle's most busiest streets heading out into Lynnwood while continuing northeast along NE Belmont Ave./NE Lynden Rd./NE Richland Hills Blvd./N Springwater Rd./NW Wooddale Rd./SE Prestonwood Dr./W Greenbrier Dr.: By 1969 Green Valley Road had become Post Office Road serving both neighboring towns as well as providing access directly into downtown Seattle via State Route 99W: It wasn't long though before other developers began investing too; by 1975 Redmond had over 200 properties containing over 4,000 apartments units along several avenues including NE 45th St., SE 4th Ave., NW 50th St., NW 65th St., SW 85th Ave., SE Greenwood Village Dr/SE 122nd Ave/.
