Redmond is a city in the U.S. state of Washington and the county seat of King County. Redmond became a city in 1881, when it was included within the larger Seattle suburb of Seattle. In 1851, James Aitken organized a group of investors called The First National Bank which began trading stocks and bonds in downtown Seattle. This act marks one milestone for Downtown Seattle as it helped give birth to Redmond as a town situated near Puget Sound on fertile land that had been sold by Aitken to local farmers for $1 per acre (about $26 per hectare today). In 1901, Microsoft founder Paul Allen purchased an parcel of land south of downtown between Pine Street and Second Avenue South which he named "Microsoft Park". He donated part of his estate back to the city for use as open space until 1962 when he donated all its remaining acres including today's Microsoft Campus. Today, Microsoft Drive runs through much of Microsoft Park while Pioneer Square lies just east of Microsoft Campus along First Avenue South between Pine Street and Yeager Road
