In 1870 John Dutton built a log cabin near present-day Union Gap Creek Road () about three miles northeast of present day Microsoft headquarters off Highway 5555 (). This was his home until his death in 1896 (). His wife Anna served as housekeeper there from 1870 until her death in 1908 (). In 1901 local businessman De Witt Fenton bought land along Indianola Creek (), east of Main Street (), making him the first person to permanently settle in what is now Redmond Township (). He laid out streets and built homes there until his death in 1954 (). Redmond had its start as an agricultural center with raising livestock and growing wheat, cornmeal, potatoes, fruits, vegetables and fruit trees. A sawmill operated here until 1865; later a flour mill followed before becoming a showcase store for Northwest lumberjacks during World War I The post office began operations at its current location here on May 2, 1861; rapid growth led to annexation by King County from Moses Lake Township () around 1900 After World War II many businesses closed or merged with other companies but some large employers such as Microsoft continued to operate here through various incarnations includingcomputer company Microsoft Research Corporation which moved into its current building adjacent to Superior High School () Owneried by Japanese American Citizens League since 1966
