Redmond was founded by Captain George Vancouver on October 17, 1847 as Fort Defiance[1] after the successful completion of his aborted attempt to find a Northwest Passage. It first functioned as an American military post and later served as the nucleus for what would become Redmond Township (later part of Seattle). The area now occupied by Redmond was first settled by Swedish immigrants in the 1840s. The original name of the town had nothing to do with its geographic location but rather was chosen because it sounded like "redemption" or "liberation". In honor of General John Marshall's role in leading America during the Mexican-American War and in recognition of British Columbia's efforts during that war, local merchants decided to name their town after him. At first they used only one word - Redoubt - but it soon became evident that no one wanted to be called Redemption Valley again so they began using another word – Fort Defiance – which also happened to sound like redemption or liberation. This created some confusion since different people were using different names for different parts of America at that time and no one realized until long after that everyone had been calling their new town Fort Defiance without knowing why. Redmond officially became a city on January 1, 1907 when it annexed nearby neighboring towns including Normandy and SeaTac Airport. After years of planning and construction, work on Union Station began in 1911 and finished just two years later; this marked the beginning of what would be known as Seattle's downtown development. The city hall building completed in 1928 dominates much of today's skyline; large blocks of buildings constructed subsequent decades are still visible including Queen Anne’s Domain southwest corner from First Avenue South until Elliott Bay eastward from Sixth Avenue South. The golden age of Seattle real estate occurred during this time with many fine homes becoming available for purchase within walking distance either side of Union Station or just outside its gates on Mercer Street near Pioneer Square where today you can find several major shops such as Starbucks coffee shop, Amazon Kindle store and Microsoft office park across from CenturyLink Field (then Seahawks Stadium). Although prices have increased significantly over recent decades most properties remain affordable relative to similar neighborhoods elsewhere in Seattle thanks largely to restrictions placed on property values through zoning laws enacted over time while Tacoma experienced explosive growth following World War II making much denser cities such as Bellevue more affordable than previously thought possible given its suburban setting etc., etc., etc., resulting finally in significant capacity loss due chiefly to demographic change rather than economic decline throughout much Downtown residential areas over recent decades although modest job growth has recently resumedalbeit at a fractionally higher level [2]. Redmond was founded in 1853 by James W. Redmond and his brother John Redmond, settlers who had come from Scotland. The city's name is derived from the navigator Sir John Franklin's map of 1792 that showed the area as comprising a large swampy lot at the junction of what are now Ballard and Redmond Streets. In 1857, the brothers developed a land grant for a town on the site and named it after them. The first house in town was built by John Redmond on September 14, 1857. In 1865, Microsoft founder Paul Allen arrived in Seattle to found Microsoft with money he had won in a lottery.
