Redmond, Washington is a city in the state of Washington and the seat for the county of Pierce. It lies on Bainbridge Island, about 20 miles (32 km) north of Seattle and 30 miles (48 km) east of Tacoma, both large metropolitan areas. Redmond was founded in 1851 as a small settlement on land donated by Chief Yakima to be the capital of Puget Sound Colony. The first store in town was opened in 1865 by W.W. Hargrave and his partners, who named it The Bellevue store after their home town near Bellevue, Washington. In 1870 the territorial government moved from Victoria to Olympia, but it remained the administrative center until 1901 when Redmond became an incorporated city with its own mayor and council. In 1912 Microsoft founder Paul Allen donated $100,000 to establish junior college here which became Central Washington University; today part of Seattle University system. The company first opened its doors to employees on April 1, 1912; however, most of their early work took place at Bothell until 1975 when they moved into their current building on Northgate Drive which still stands today as one of the most iconic buildings in town. In October 1976 Microsoft announced plans to build a new campus adjacent to Interstate 5 just south of downtown Redmond which would eventually house up to 4 million square feet (240 thousand m2) of floor space and employ over 100 thousand people by 2019 - making it one of the largest contiguous employer campuses within fifty miles ( eighty kilometers) of Seattle! The new campus was built and opened in three phases between 1979 and 1990: phase 1 consisted of an open-air shopping mall anchored by JCPenney; phase 2 included office towers along I-5; phase 3 included a mixed use/residential complex called Bellevue Place which anchors much of Bellevue Avenue NE & SW cornering Indian Hill Rd., across from CenturyLink Field

In 1954, voters approved incorporation into countywide Seattle; this marked the beginning of further suburbanization which continues to this day (though not without controversy). Redmond has since been characterized as one of America’s most diverse cities; its residents include residents from all walks of life, including many who were raised outside of town.
