Ballou named his discovery "Redmond" after Bellevue, Washington which he had seen on his previous trip to that area. A post office called Redmond was established in 1906, and remained in operation until 1971. In 1911–12, John Daugherty developed land east of present day Redmond along with fellow Microsoft employee Arthur Merrill to create a large agricultural center around what would eventually be called Northgate shopping mall today; this development became known as Lynnwood Village after Daugherty's wife Lynnwood who helped him develop it. In 1924Microsoft relocated its main offices from Bellevue toREDMOND following purchase by J & L Thompson Co., Ltd..
