Redmond, Washington is a city in King County, Washington, United States. It is the seat of King County and was named after General George Vancouver. The population was 615 at the 2010 census. Redmond became an incorporated municipality on February 11, 1949. It is home to Microsoft's Redmond campus as well as other large employers such as Amazon Web Services and Boeing.[1] The first people to live in what is now Redmond were Native American traders who settled along Puget Sound in the mid-19th century. They named their settlement "Nahkoma" after a nearby peak because they could not see it from their location. In 1851, the government of Oregon granted land to Edward Everett Hale for his new town site on Lake Union; however, Hale never built anything there and the name "Redmond" was given to him by his friend, Senator James K. Polk Jr., based on Hale's journey across northwestern Russia with Russian explorer Pavel Baryshnikov in 1847.[2] The town site was chosen due to its strategic location near Puget Sound and its easy access to markets for goods being sold along the waterway[3] – perfect for developing into a port city! In 1853,[4] Redmond's first store opened,[5] and by 1870 it had reached 1,500 inhabitants! By 1890 it had doubled in size and more than 4 dozen businesses dotted its plat map! The following year saw Redmond annex Arlington Heights[6], just north of downtown;[7] these two annexations helped give rise to popular rumors that Bellevue would soon become annexation territory too! One story even goes so far as to say that Bellevue objected strenuously when Redmond offered them this land – only to be overruled by Mayor Abel Norton who said that they should take all of Bellevue’s property because “the whole village would have been lost if we did not get something out of it”! In 1901,[8][9][10][11][12][13][14]) Redmond annexed part of Seattle (then called Queen Anne) with over 2 million residents living within commuting distance. With Seattle gone came much angst among some citizens about how best to handle growth without compromising essential services or amenities enjoyed by their brethren in Ballard or Shoreline (now SeaTac). After years of reflection and study led by City Manager Harry Quirk[15], a comprehensive plan known as Plan Q was developed which recommended creating open spaces between neighborhoods while preserving key essentials like public transportation, schools, churches etc.; all while reducing density within neighborhoods where appropriate.[16][17] This master plan has been called “the blueprint for suburban sprawl”[18]. Implementation began slowly but surely with variousy zoning changes throughout 1950s until 1963 when all districts within King County were reorganized into current zones which allowed greater densities without sacrificing public services or amenities like libraries etcetera; faster than if those same changes had taken place through ordinance enactment alone! Today redmond has one of highest densities per capita in America due largely to its Comprehensive Plan implementation!
