Redmond was settled by Swedish immigrants in 1851 and named after Peter Redmond, an officer with the British Columbia Regiment who had served in India during 1849-1850. The city became a consolidated town of Bellevue and Redmond on January 1, 1899; it was incorporated as a city on November 3, 1909. The area now occupied by Redmond first came under cultivation about 12 miles (19 km) west of present-day Seattle by early settlers including brothers Lars and Sven Hansonius in 1851. In 1859, John Jacob Astor bought 640 acres (240 ha) east of Bellevue for $10 per acre ($2/ha). He named his new land "Redmond," after hisuncle's farm near Edinburgh, Scotland. After Astor's death in 1865, his estate passed to his brother Carlisle Astor Jr., who renamed it "Redmond" again after buying another 640 acres (240 ha). In 1870s Redding Prairie School District No 9 leased land east of Bellevue from John Jacob Astor to use as farmland for teaching children before they were sent to school in Seattle or Tacoma. In 1902 the school district moved out of that location when all of its territory within today's Bellevue neighborhood was annexed into Seattle proper by annexation on April 15th 1903 which also included much of what is now Redmond Township . On July 25th 1912 Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen purchased 5 square miles (12 km²) northeast of downtown Bellevue from Josephine Baker for $640 ($4/acre). On October 6th 1912 Microsoft opened its first office at 4404 Beacon Ave NE – home to then-employees Nelson & Palmer’s bakery until 1935 – located just one block south of today’s Microsoft building adjacent to Yesler Way . The original goal behind moving Microsoft headquarters from Seattle to Everett was multifaceted: To provide more space for employees working on various aspects of computer programming while avoiding close physical proximity to banks and other commercial businesses; also because Everett had been selected as site due to its strategic location between Puget Sound and Lake Washington—two major water bodies providing easy access needed computing power during wartime years with increased military activity across the region
