Redmond, Washington is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 54,903 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in King County and the most populous city east of Seattle. Redmond's economy rests on its many businesses which produce goods for export throughout the Northwest region. With an annual GDP of $5 billion and over 100,000 jobs, Redmond is one of Washinton's largest economic engines. Redmond was founded in 1851 as a small town on Linn Street in what is now known as Pioneer Square. In 1861, when Bellevue became a county seat and Redmond took over from Linn as its commercial and industrial center, it had a population of only 7 residents; by 1865 it had grown to 507 residents with two hotels and several stores. The first store opened in 1871 with John Waring selling groceries to farmers along Wall Street. By 1888 there were six stores active in town- four grocery stores (one owned by J&J Munroe), two hardware stores (owned by Boren & Company) and one clothing store (owned by Hargrave Brothers). In 1893 Microsoft founder Paul Allen established his own software development company called Microsoft Research that would become one of Microsoft's mainstay strengths through the years; he also co-founded Kutztown University with his business partner Herb Kaptur in 1962. In 1967 RCA Victor Music Industries purchased Capitol Records for US$25 million making Capitol Records' parent companyRCA Corp., one of America's largest music companies until its purchase by CBS Corporation in 1988).
