The Puyallup Shooting Guild was organized in 1871. It became an American Rifle Association affiliate in 1892. The first target holders meeting took place on October 3, 1871 at the old Swedish Lutheran Church. There were only twelve members of the guild, but within a year they had built a shooting range and began to use it for rifle practice. In 1889, the Puyallup Rifle Club was formed and soon afterwards, the Puyallup Shotgun & Pistol Club. In 1934, both organizations united to form the present-day Puyallup Shooting Guild. The guild meets twice a month and now has over 160 members from across rural Washington state. Today, target holders from all walks of life come together to shoot at our beautiful range overlooking Puget Sound. Puyallup is a small town in Kitsap County, Washington. The population was 1,674 at the 2000 census. Puyallup is the hometown of Olympian Dennis Rodman and NBA player Shaquille O'Neal. It also played host to the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
The Puyallup River was named for Captain John Pike, a British officer who explored the area in 1809. The first settlement on the river was at Puyallup Point, about 2 miles south of present-day Olympia. In 1825, the town of Puyallup was platted and became a agricultural center. The town's original name may have been derived from "yalpa" or "cañon." A post office was established in 1827, and by 1830, the population had reached 100 people. In 1850, the towns of Olympia and Pasco were created within Thurston County; Puyallup became part of Olympia. In 1861, when Tacoma County was formed, Puyallup became part of that county. By 1870, it had grown to over 200 people. In 1886, a railroad line was completed through the area making it an important transportation link for the region. The community experienced rapid growth during this time; by 1890 it had become one of the largest cities in Washington state. Growth slowed after World War II due to limited economic opportunities and competition from larger metropolitan areas in Northern Washington State. However, population growth resumed during recent years as increasing suburban development has caused more people to move into central Puget Sound counties such as King County and Pierce County from outlying rural areas
