The area around Everett was home to several tribes before European explorers came across them during their exploration campaigns in North America at this time. One such explorer was Captain Vancouver who explored British Columbia in 1792–93 and recorded observations about Indigenous people he encountered on July 24th 1792 while exploring Puget Sound: "They are very proper people... They build houses without mortar or brick but with sticks covered with earth [and] they have no doors other than some small openings out of which they come out to speak".[2] From this observation it can be inferred that these tribal groups did not have housing developments similar to those we see today although they may have relied on smoke signals as communication tools during certain times periods such as winter.[1][3] Although there is no direct evidence demonstrating contact between Native Americans and Europeans prior to 1700 AD,[4] various artifacts found throughout Northwest Angle testify to trade relationships between these cultures at least 2 millennia ago:[5][6][7][8] therefore it is safe assume that early interactions took place regardless of geographical barriers or lack thereof
The Puyallup Creek flows through the city and runs into Puget Sound. The first European to visit the area was Captain George Vancouver in 1792. The Seattle-Puyallup Ferry operated from 1851 until 1959.
