Puyallup, Washington is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 7,851 at the 2010 census. Puyallup is located on the eastern shore of Puget Sound. The name may be derived from French poule (pigeon) and allusive suffix -al- (sink), meaning "meadow" or "prominence." The first European settler in what is now Puyallup was George Vancouver in 1792. He named his new land Point Defiance after his Scottish home near Edinburgh. The first post office opened in 1857, and the first store opened in 1859. In 1870, Puyallup became part of King County and was platted as it is today. In 1907 it annexed the adjoining town of Orcas Island to its north; this annexation created a second city government for Puyallup but with no voting power until 1959 when it became an incorporated area with voting rights under the new state law governing cities and towns within King County. In 1916 a fire destroyed most of the milling industry around Puget Sound; however, other industries continued to grow throughout World War II including automobiles and aluminum products boomtowns like Lynnwood across Seattle's west side and Kent before they had any competition from mainland Tacoma or Bellevue The 2000 Census counted 7,851 people living in Puyallup; 5% were non-Hispanic white alone, 3% non-Hispanic black alone, 11% Hispanic/Latino American Indian alone; 8% were single family households: lone occupant families made up only 15%. Female householders made up 41% of all households while male householders made up 58%. Two thirds of all housing units were owner-occupied while one third were occupied by renters

Puyallup was first settled by fur traders in 1788. The town was founded on the site of present-day Puyallup Lake. In 1881, it became an incorporated town and has since grown to become one of the most populous towns in King County.
The Puyallup River flows through the town of Puyallup and is a tributary of the Columbia River. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Washington was under way by 1792, when French traders founded the city of Alexandria on the east bank of the river. Dutch fur traders also began trading in what is now Washington in 1804. In 1825, Puget Sound became part of Oregon Territory; as a result, most American efforts to establish a missions or Presidio in Puget Sound were unsuccessful. In 1861, during America's Civil War, General Ulysses S. Grant ordered Major General David Dixon to march his army from Tacoma downriver to points west and attack Fort Sumter on the South Side of Puget Sound. Dixon failed to reach his destination before darkness compelled him to abort his mission. On 14 October 1861, Union forces disembarked at Point Defiance on Elliott Bay and began siege warfare against Fort Sumter until finally surrendering on 15 October 1861. The fortification had been built by Spanish colonists in 1795-97 after they won control of parts of Puget Sound from Native Americans; it was one of several factors that led to Seattle's rapid growth as an important port during this period.
