In 1863 the post office changed its name to Puget Sound and remained that way until it was discontinued on October 15, 1907. The first store in Puyallup opened on Main Street on July 7, 1919 by cashier Clyde Hargrave and proprietor Hiram Aiken Jr.. It closed down two months later due to lack of customers. The first school in Puyallup opened on September 10th of that year under the name of "Puget Sound School" which operated from grades one through twelve until it merged with nearby Genesee High School in 1951. This school building still stands today located across from the KIRO-TV studios along State Route 99E near milepost 17½ of Interstate 5W approximately 4 miles east of the town center

Puyallup is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,717 at the 2010 census. The name Puyallup comes from the Potlatch Indian tribe'sNisqually River settlement of Koyukon. The first settler in what is now Puyallup was George Couggan, who arrived around 1847. He homesteaded on land that later became part of the city of Seattle. In 1855, John Curtis established a ferry terminal on Puget Sound and named it Curtis Ferry Landing after himself and his brother Jonathan Curtis. It served as the main artery connecting Tacoma with Olympia until 1907 when Puget Sound Bridge was built over the river between Tacoma and Olympia. In 1863, Capt. James Charles McLaughlin founded a logging camp at Anacortes on Juan de Fuca Island to fell trees for lumber shipped downriver to Seattle and Tacoma. At first he used local Indians to help him but eventually started hiring white men because he could afford it. By 1865, McLaughlin had developed an extensive oak plantation which yielded some 400 barrels of oil each day from itsítrees; this began America's commercial exploitation of Oregonís Willamette Valley forest resources.(1) A major early employer in Puyallup was mud-pudding production by settlers working for copper prospectors during the late 1800s.(2) Notable citizens include: Levi Strauss (1853-1929), one of Americaís leading manufacturerísof clothing; Jens Jensen (1889-1966), co-founder of Microsoft; Winthrop Rockefeller (1892-1972), fourth son of Standard Oil magnate John Dutton Rockefeller; Rear Admiral Elmer Gantry Ballantine (1898-1979), U S Navy officer who commanded Task Force 77 during World War II; Everett Dirksen (1907-1974), U S Senator from Illinois; and Lester Davies (1914-) Owner/ Operator Red Lobster restaurant in downtown Puyallup
