The town developed around an agricultural boom in the early 20th century due to its location near Puget Sound and access to irrigation water supplies. During World War II it served as a bombing target for Boeing airfields in southern Puget Sound; these raids killed more than 150 people and injured more than 300 others. The post-World War II period saw a growth in manufacturing industries such as plastics, tire manufacturing and agriculture; however, much of this activity has since ended or been relocated to other parts of King County. In recent years there has been a growth in small businesses with emphasis on Service Learning opportunities for local students through Colleges/ Universities partnerships Today's economy leans heavily towards government services such as health care and social assistance; however there are also several large hotel chains operating within walking distance from downtown which brings many tourists into town each year Forrest Gump's restaurant is one example

In 1837, a patent was granted to Isaac Stern for a device designed to allow a gunner to sling ammunition over his shoulder in order to fire from a distance. The early gunslingers would often use this method of firing while lying down since it allowed them complete control of their weapon. By the late 1800s, however, most gunners began using rifles which required them to elevate the barrel in order to fire. This caused problems withgun slings because they had limited range and couldn’t be fired from more than about 30 feet away.

Puyallup was founded in 1851 as a small town on the banks of the Puyallup River. The area that is now Puyallup was part of the Whitman County region, which was located in eastern Washington. In 1882, Puyallup became a city and remained so until 1959. The name "Puyallup" is from Algonquian words meaning "to go downstream." The first settler in what is now Puyallup County was James Linn, who arrived in 1851 and named his new community after himself, Pyle-Algonquin or simply "Pyle." Linn's colony grew rapidly and by 1861 had a population of about 250 people. By 1870, the population had reached 1,500 people. Linn's colony prospered because he developed an industry based on irrigation techniques used to grow crops such as wheat and corn. This type of agriculture was new at the time and became very successful because it allowed for large profits to be made quickly. Eventually, other settlers also came to join Linn in his colony and it soon boasted a population of 3,000 people. By 1882, however, things were beginning to change for Puyallup. The Panic of 1873 hit America hard and many businesses closed their doors nationwide. Businesses in rural areas particularly took a hit because farmers could no longer afford to pay high prices for goods exported from America. As a result of this recessionary period, many jobs went unfilled and poverty increased among local citizens. In response to these challenges facing the town during this time period, Mayor John Witherspoon enacted several measures designed to make life easier for residents including providing freezers with ice cream when temperatures dipped below 20 degrees Fahrenheit; providing buses transportation throughout town; creating job opportunities for young men; improving public sanitation facilities; providing financial assistance to those who needed it most; developing new recreational amenities such as an amusement park; and increasing funding for education within the community through various programs like technical schools etcetera. Numerous initiatives like these helped improve conditions within Puyallup while also helping Toombsville become one of Eastern Washington’s most vibrant communities during this time period
