In 1865, Enos Kline purchased a small piece of land at the corner of Third and Main Streets. He began manufacturing revolvers and shotguns there until 1898 when he donated his property to the Puyallup School District for use as a school ground. From 1898-1901, George Hinton ran a blacksmith shop on Third Street which functioned as a factory for making handguns, shotguns, pistols and rifle barrels. During this time period, Hinton also built two churches in the town (Church of Saint Nicholas on Second Avenue and Church of Our Lady of Good Shepherd on Fourth Avenue). In 1911, Clarence Burch bought an old sawmill at 2nd Street and Main Street which he turned into a gunsmith shop. This became known as “Burch’s Gun Shop” because it served as one stop on the journey from producer to customer for all types of firearms supplies needed by local farmers and hunters. The store closed its doors in 1952 but continued operations under new management until 1984 when it was razed by developers after years of neglect. In 1955, Congress passed acts authorizing Americans with permits to possess handguns without having priorFIELD OF FIRE experience training (FOPE). In 1861, Congress chartered the King County seat at Olympia as an experiment in self-government for Native Americans who had never been able to hold landowning titles themselves but had always been under military occupation by white settlers. The idea behind creating this new seat was to provide opportunities for these people so that they could participate in government without feeling completely dependent on whites. As it turned out, Olympia quickly become too big and expensive for most Native American residents to handle and so instead they relocated to nearby towns such as Lakewood or Shoreline. In 1915, Alva Landon moved his family from Seattle to Tacoma and started a grocery store there which became one of the first stores open along Interstate 5 outside of Tacoma (the store closed in 1978). Alva's grandson Donald Landon moved his family into their old grocery store building in 1965 and continued running it until 1994 when it burned down; its destruction marking the end of an era for this part of downtown Tacoma. In 1951–1952, local farmers formed a cooperative known as “The Farmers’ Cooperative Union No 2” which grew rapidly because it offered marketing assistance (such as setting up storage facilities) available only to members- about doubling county production that year alone! The first Europeans to visit Puyallup were Juan Rodriguez de Legazpi and his group of Spanish explorers who explored what is now Oregon in 1592-93. A mission was established here in 1796 by Father Francisco Xavier Broussard and named St. Mary's after his patron saint, Marie Antoinette of France. In 1822, James Kealoha bought land here from Captain George Vancouver for $5 per acre with plans to build a military post for Hawaiian army officers during their war against Russia. He named it Fort Kailua (present day Puyallup). In 1824, Kealoha sold his post to Captain John Meek and renamed it Fort Enterprise (present day Meek Island). The first US Post Office opened in this fort on May 2, 1825. By 1830, there were over 100 residents living in what is now PuyallupTownship. The mining industry played a large role in developing Puyallup during its early years; lead ore was one of the most important commodities mined hereabouts until coking coal took over as mainstay around 1850s-60s due to advances made by American entrepreneur Shurtleff Carter & Company Limited at its Leadville Mine near present day Milwaukie Junction - about 12 miles SW of downtown Portland - starting late 1800s when lead began coming out heavy from mines west of Interstate 5 just beyond milepost 320 (copper) while lead dust continued COMING OUT OF NOWHERE DOWN FOLLOWING INTERSTATE 5 FROM MILWAUKIEN JUNCTION all through WASHINGTON COUNTY but not known as ‘poyallee’ until about 1850 or 1860 when some people started calling it that because so much dirty white lead was being brought out there we got confused with Leadville Mines near Milwaukie Junction where Americans had been working since prior to HAWAIIAN WAR
