In 1873, when Congress authorized compulsory sale of public lands for farm purposes within King County, only about one-fourth of what had been appropriated for this purpose had been sold. A committee was appointed to study land suitable for agricultural settlement within King County; its report recommended that all available land be purchased and homesteaded by township trustees who would then sell it back to settlers at fair prices under regulations prescribed byCongress. Accordingly, on July 1st, 1874 (the date that township trustees received their orders), Portland Township established itself as a separate political entity with a population of just under 500 residents – 200 more than existed in downtown Puyalluppor’s “village center” – as purchasers of allotments west of I-5 took advantage of legislation authorizing township formation which also provided for condemnation proceedings should any part or all of such allotment be sold without following due process whatever might happen with respect thereto Portland Township quickly grew into one of Puget Sound’s most populous towns during its early years: During 1880-1890 it reached 614 residents; during 1900-1910 it topped 750 occupants vernacular phrase spoken here until recently has always been called “Puget Park” because many nice properties have been annexed by other municipalities since then but everyone still remembers where they lived when they first heard it
