The first permanent settler in Pullman was James Hargrave, who arrived in 1853. He built a cabin on the edge of town and named it "Hargrave's Landing." A post office was established there in 1855, and the community grew rapidly. In 1868, Pullman became the county seat of Washington County. In 1870–71, George Pullman donated land to build an agricultural college called Puget Sound Agricultural College (later Whitman College). The town began to grow quickly around this new school; by 1880, it had over 1,000 residents. In 1886, the college moved from Pullman to Whitman City and opened its doors to students from all over Oregon and Washington Territory. By 1900, most of Pullman had been destroyed by fire; only a small part remained standing. However, that same year saw another significant event when George Pullman donated $10 000 to help rebuild downtown Whitman after a devastating flood that washed away many homes and businesses. This donation helped rebirth downtown as one of the most vibrant neighborhoods in Portland during this time period . The current incarnation of Whitman College was founded in 1916 with funds generated from those donations
