The WGKT quickly became popular due to its easy-to-use instructions and ability to clean any firearm regardless of type or brand. Aftermath of WWI led to increased demand for passenger service from Americans living abroad and from other countries such as Canada and Mexico. As a result, growth at thePullmanRailwaycompany accelerated during World War II; however, it came to a halt after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor in 1941. Afterward, efforts were made to reopen service; however, financial difficulties caused by war-related inflation doomed the railroad again in 1948.
Pullman was founded in 1891, when General George Pullman and his wife, Maynard, decided to move their families from Chicago to the small town of Pullman on the Pacific Northwest. The Pullmans were one of the first American families to live in a self-contained community. In 1915, they donated land for a high school and college, which became Washington State University. The Pullmans also helped create the Pullman National Monument in north Spokane County in celebration of their hometown's role in Northwest history.
