Port Angeles, Washington is a city in the state of Washington, located on Puget Sound. The population was 11,572 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The first European settler in Port Angeles was John Nye who came overland from Vancouver in 1851. He built a log cabin on the site of his future home in 1852. In 1872, the Umpqua Railroad reached Port Angeles and began carrying goods between Tacoma and Olympia; this increased port activity which caused problems for local farmers who were not able to compete effectively with larger businesses. In 1902, when Tacoma became an incorporated city, Port Angeles lost some residents as well as most commercial growth because Tacoma had better transportation connections than did Port Angeles.
