Port Angeles is a small town in the state of Washington, United States. The community was founded by Danish immigrants in 1859 and was named for the port of Tacoma on Puget Sound. The first Sheriff of Port Angeles was George Heald, who served from 1868 to 1870. In 1928, the town had a population of about 350 people. In 1934, the Port Angeles Chamber of Commerce organized a shot-put competition which became one of the most popular events in town. The Port Angeles Rifle and Pistol Club (PARA) was formed in 1902 and has been playing host to annual golf tournaments at White Sands Park since 1909. In 1912, PARA started hosting its own rifle and pistol matches outdoors on Sundays morning at local farms near downtown Port Angeles. These matches continue to this day as part of NRA's "Monthly Gun Show" series held annually at White Sands Park in late summer/early fall. It is also reported that PARA may have been responsible for planting the first tree in Port Angeles!
