The discovery of gold in Whatcom County in 1861 led to an influx of new settlers to what would become Port Angeles and nearby Thurston County. By 1870 there were over one thousand people living in the area around Puget Sound and what is now Port Angeles Harbor. Gold fever ran high as prospectors looked for new veins of gold scattered throughout this vast region that still held many untapped resources centuries later. In 1872 the first store opened in the town when Wm Hickey began peddling goods from his wagon out front on Railroad Street past what is now Scenic Avenue (). At that time there were no schools or other public amenities available to residents of port city except for fishing trips downriver from Olympia (now Tacoma) which cost $5 per person including transportation and lunchtime! On January 25th 1888 Territorial Governor John Denny authorized erection of a public jail within three miles (5 km) of present day downtown Port Angeles by order of then Territory Marshal J R Thomson as part of efforts to secure justice for Native Americans who were being arrested without warrants or due process under Indian Removal Laws enforced by Ulysses S Grant's executive authority during the final days before America became a republic underPresident James K Polk

Port Angeles, Washington was founded in 1854 as the town of Coeur d'Alene. The first post office was established in 1855 and the first school was opened in 1857. In 1860, the town changed its name to Port Angeles and it became a city in 1907. The city is located on Puget Sound and has a population of over 50,000 people. The history of Port Angeles begins with explorer George Vancouver's visit to the area in 1792. He estimated that there were only about 10 houses throughout the village which he called "Tacoma." The first European settlers arrived in what is now Port Angeles on December 6, 1854 when John A. Denny and his party set out from Fort Bridger on horseback for Whatcom County looking for land to colonize. Denny had been married to Gertrude Smeaton, daughter of Chief Seattle of Bainbridge Island who granted him permission to explore this part of Washington Territory. Denny's party reached what is now Port Angeles on January 14th, 1855 and erected a temporary cabin at Point Defiance beach while they awaited news from their journey southward. On February 7th, they discovered an iceberg blocking their way so they began the arduous process of breaking it free by hand using pieces of driftwood as shields from boats anchored nearby. After daysof hard work, they succeeded and reached their destination where they pitched camp for the night near present day Point Defiance Boulevard and Second Street East。 On February 8th, Denny wrote a letter home advising his family that he had discovered "a most extraordinary country" containing many lakes, rivers and mountains including "a very large river [the] Snake]" but advise them not to travel any further because "[t]he weather hereabouts is too cold." Unfortunately for Denny his group didn't reach Seattle until after Christmas due toweather conditions along the way; however Vancouver's map still shows what must have been an impressive view down into Puget Sound from Mount Rainier overlooking everything around him! In order to commemorate this event three miles east of present day downtown Port Angeles along Third Street north (now First Street) stood mile marker 3 on George Vancouver’s original mapping which still exists today
The first permanent European settlement on the Peninsula was made by Juan de Fuca in 1792. The area now known as Port Angeles was part of the Mexican territory of Alta California for over a century. In 1846, after Mexico gained independence from Spain, it organized its own government and began to explore and claim new territories east of the Sierra Madre. On March 15, 1852, it acquired land west of Puget Sound from British Columbia in what is now the state of Washington. The purchase created an unincorporated area known as "Port Angeles" within British Columbia. In 1870, when King George V granted self-government to Washington Territory, Port Angeles became one of its original twelve townships.
