Port Angeles is a town in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,936 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kitsap County. The town was founded by Danish immigrants in 1854 as an agricultural community on the eastern shore of Port Orchard Lake. The name may be derived from "Portsmouth" in England, where some early settlers had come ashore to trade goods with Russia and Japan before sailing southward for New York City. The original town plat was filed on March 11, 1855 and named after Portsmouth, England. A post office called Portsmouth was established in 1865, but it closed in 1893. In 1902 Port Angeles became a city when it annexed portions of nearby Unalaska and Northport . The first settler who lived permanently in Port Angeles was Jens Christensen (1810-1867). He constructed a sawmill on the east side of the lake and set up a grocery store there around 1830.
