Port Angeles is a small town in the Okanogan Valley of Washington State. The population was 1,541 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Kitsap Peninsula, and is bordered by the towns of Shelton to the north and Similkameen to the east. The first European settlers in what is now Port Angeles were French fur traders who arrived in 1792. By 1824, most of present-day Port Angeles had been founded as part of what would become King County. At that time, it was one of several small communities along Puget Sound that formed an agricultural belt stretching from Olympia to Tacoma. After years of growth and development, Businessman George Willoughby purchased land near downtown Port Angeles in 1868 for $10,000. He developed what became known as Willoughby Park which included a wharf on Elliott Bay where ships could be unloaded and berth for shipment across Puget Sound. In 1876, he donated land adjacent to his park to become Waveland Beach which today plays host to many summer activities including swimming and sunbathing. A year later, Willoughby's grandson, Commodore George Cushing Willoughby donated another tract of land adjoining Waveland Beach for use as an Naval Air Station (NAS). NAS Port Angeles played an important role during World War II when it served as a naval air base providing stability in the Strait of Juan de Fuca while American forces fought against Japan. Today NAS Port Angeles retains its role as a vital military facility with its primary mission being support operations at Naval Base Kitsap-Halexcito on Orcas Island. In 1978, NAS Port Angeles transitioned from commercial operation to run primarily as a naval research station doing joint research with other institutions across Washington state. In 2000, NASPortAngels merged into NAVSEA - North America's largest maritime organization - creating one single organization responsible for all U.S NavyMaritime Operations worldwide.In 2006 NASPortAngels merged into NavTEAM - Northwest Regional Maritime AllianceOn January 1st 2007 NAVSEA adopted their new logo www.navteamonline.com/assets/images/Logos/_NAVPORTANGELS_LOGO3D_.jpg
