The first permanent settler in what is now Port Angeles was John Wesley Smith and his family in 1836. In 1840, the town was organized as a port city under the name of Tacoma on Puget Sound. In 1861, when America became embroiled in the Civil War, Tacoma seceded from Washington and joined Confederate States of America (CSA). The port city quickly lost its importance as a trade center following the war but regained some recent cachet with its role as home to Boeing Aircraft Company’s experimental aircraft factory during World War II. After the war ended, Port Angeles slowly recovered until it reached its current level of development around 1990 when it annexed neighboring Lake Union into its boundaries. Port Angeles has seen many significant changes over time; one example is that it has become an increasingly ethnically diverse community due to immigration into the area over time.
