Gun pouches have a long and varied history in the Port Angeles area. In 1854, two brothers, John and James Waring, designed and built the first gun pouch in what is now the town of Port Angeles. The Waring pouches were made from volunteer army surplus clothing and were used to carry rifles and pistols. They quickly became popular among local residents, and by 1860, there were more than 100 gun pouches in operation in the town. In 1861, the United States Civil War began, and soon after, Port Angeles saw a surge of military activity. Soldiers from all over Washington arrived in town to take part in the war effort. Many of these soldiers brought their firearms with them when they left port city. As gun pouches became more common among troops stationed in town, people started to complain about how difficult it was to keep track of which weapons were owned by which individuals. This led to the development of paper passports for soldiers so that individual arms could be easily identified. After the war ended, Port Angeles continued to see an influx of troops; this time as part of The Pacific Expeditionary Force under General Douglas MacArthur. As military activity decreased in Port Angeles during World War II, citizens turned their attention back to their everyday lives; however, some guns still lingered from earlier times- some stored away on display at various businesses or used sparingly by occasional visitors before being passed down into new hands again. By 1986, only a few guns remained unaccounted for following its closure due to vandalism or neglect; however such cases are not typically reported anymore because they are easier Forgotten Weapons Act violations than taking legal action against offenders (see also: "Gun Pouch History Timeline" below). The first guns in the area were pistols acquired by the Port Angeles Indian tribe. There was also a small rifle club which used rifles to hunt game. The first gun magazines were started in 1889 and 1892. In 1896, there was a pistol exhibition on the pier and 26 pistols were exhibited. The Columbian Exposition in Chicago brought over 1000 people to town and contributed to increased gun traffic in the area. In 1907, Tacoma Gun Works opened up shop in downtown Tacoma with an inventory of 300 handguns, shotguns, rifles and revolvers. This was followed by several other stores within a few years until the entire region had become heavily firearm-related. In 1916, Tacoma Industrial Corporation began manufacturing shotgun pellets for local sporting events and published "Tacoma Sporting News" from that point on until 1935 when it merged into Snapper magazine Incorporated
Port Angeles is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 9,821 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Kitsap Peninsula on the south side of Elliott Bay and is part of the Seattle-Tacoma Metropolitan Area. The town was founded in 1892 by John Dutton as Port Townsend. The name "Port Angeles" probably comes from an incident that took place there on November 12, 1891 when Commodore James Caird and his ship " Alert ", commanded by Rear Admiral George Vancouver , were lost off the coast of San Juan Islands . Their vessels had been sailing together under aFriendship Treaty between Great Britain and America when they were lost. In 1898, diphtheria killed 27 people in Prince Rupert . On October 3rd of that year, Captain John Alderney ordered all stores to be burned because he knew supplies would not get into port if it remained unopened. This act helped start what would become known as “the great fire” which destroyed much of downtown Port Angeles

By 1940, however, its economy had begun to decline due to factors such as population growth and an increase in traffic on the bridges connecting Seattle and Tacoma. After years of struggle,Port Angeles fell victim to bankruptcy in 1984. however, it has since renaissance thanks to efforts by local officials and businessmen over the past few decades - most notably Mayor Jerry Brown - which have helped bring new investment to town while preserving its cultural heritage.
