Port Angeles is a town in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. The population was 3,951 at the 2010 census. It lies on the east side of Puget Sound and is bordered by the towns of Bremerton to the south and Poulsbo to the north. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Port Angeles were Englishmen who arrived in 1792 when they sail from England on HMS Discovery. They named their new discovery after General George Vancouver, captain of HMS Resolution which had discovered North America two years earlier. The first white men to live in what is now Port Angeles were Indians who led by Chief Sekwenzilek came overland from British Columbia in 1827. In 1836, Port Angeles became a town under territorial jurisdiction of Seattle Territory. In 1909, a group of Scandinavian-Americans founded the town's first grocery store and hotel called "The American". In 1913, voters approved incorporation as a city with its own government under Mayor Harry Sledge; however this proposal was never ratified because it would have required voter approval for any major changes within the city limits other than annexation by neighboring communities such as Bremerton or Poulsbo. After World War I ended hostilities between Seattle and Tacoma Province over fishing rights near Nisqually Reach in Olympia Township (now Snohomish County), Seattle decided that Port Angeles should become an official part of its metropolitan area rather than allow Tacoma to continue governing it separately. On December 15th 1920 City Council passed resolution approving annexing both cities into one municipality with name “Seattle” On October 15th 1923 vote passed by City Council legalising seashore fronting property owned by Tacoma Municipality extending 2 miles out into Puget Sound providing harbor for seagoing vessels up to 100 tons burden which became effective January 1st 1926

A sawmill was started in 1876 and continued operation until it went out of business in 1902. The harbor became an important commercial center during this time with warehouses and factories located along both sides of the harbor. A fire destroyed most of the businesses around 1908, but not before producing some high-quality lumber which allowed Port Angeles to become a major lumber producer during World War I. After World War I ended, port development resumed with new companies such as Alcoa beginning operations around 1920; however, economic recession hitport cities hard during this time period. In 1928, University Park Community School opened its doors to students living on or near University Park Drive; this marked the beginning of a more permanent population presence inPort Angeles. With rapid development taking place throughout much of Northwest Washington during these years - including growth across the Sound into Thurston County - many people began calling Port Angeles "TheTown That Time Forgot." During this time period it boasted world-renowned resorts such as Mount Rainier National Park and Olympic National Park visitor centers like SeaTac Airport; however due to dramatic changes occurring throughout much of Northwest Washington during the 1930s through 1940s - including increased taxes on businesses - traditional industry left town while tourism exploded; leading to socioeconomic decline within decades afterwards known as "thelost decade".
