Port Angeles is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 9,352 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Olympic Peninsula and is part of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area. The first permanent European settlers in what would become Port Angeles were Captain George Vancouver and his party of thirteen men who sailed into Puget Sound on July 14, 1792 to find a new home for the British Columbia Colony. They named their new settlement "Vancouver's Bay" in honor of Vancouver. A year later they established a trading post at present day Fort Duwamish (now inside the city limits of Tacoma). In 1807, while Captain John Steinbeck was exploring Puget Sound as part of his explorations for land grants there, he discovered an estuary called Elliott Bay which he named "Port Angeles". In 1851 Congress appropriated $25,000 to build a wharf on Elliott Bay so that ships could be landed at Seattle and loaded with goods for export to China. The town site was chosen because it had good soil and harbor access from both Elliott Bay and Lake Union without having any mountains or other obstructions between them. The wharf was built by shipwrights employed by General Mills, who also developed the port into one of America's leading cargo ports before World War II. On May 15th 1906 Port Angeles became incorporated as a town when it joined King County under the provisions of state law then being passed through Congress establishing local government structures for towns within county borders subject only to county taxes and election by residents thereof; such incorporation being effected by vote of residents therein resident qualified thereto voting upon question put to them relative to formality only proceedings required thereunder not prejudicial to said inhabitants herein aforesaid nor tending therein in anywise; thenceforward no proper elections have ever been held heretofore save those now occasioned by special events hereinabove written excepting such occasional matters hereafter hereinbefore provided for viz.: Town Meeting
