The history of firearms in Port Angeles, Washington date back to the early 1800s. The first firearm in Port Angeles was a rifle purchased by Captain George Vancouver from Native Americans. In 1825, Colonel John Eaton of the United States military arrived in Port Angeles and began stocking arms for the local militia. In 1852, Captain James Aitken purchased land outside of town and founded the city of Tacoma on it. After Tacoma became an incorporated city, it imported firearms into its city limits and began selling them through a store located on 5th Avenue North. In 1865, Captain Edwin Mowat took over ownership of the store and continued to sell guns until his death in 1897. His son-in-law Harry Blackmore took over management of the store until 1911 when it was sold to Hilda Swenson who operated it until her death in 1948. It was then passed down through her daughters until it was sold to Ozzie Beavers in 1954 who continued to operate it as Beavers Firearms Department until 1974 when he closed it due to financial difficulties. The current owner is C&R Arms which opened its doors on December 3rd, 2018

The first post office in Port Angeles opened in 1854. In 1909, it merged with neighboring Whitman to form the present-day City of Whitman. In 1925, Port Angeles became an incorporated town under state law; it reverted to its original name as of 1990. As of the 2010 census, there were 5,814 people living in Port Angeles proper and 1,671 residents of annexed areas such as Sumnerville and White Salmon River Estates. The economy of Port Angeles is based primarily on government services and businesses that provide goods and services to area residents including education (including public schools), health care (including municipal hospitals), fire prevention/rescue services, water systems and other essential infrastructure needs. Many local businesses also produce specific types of products or services related to those mentioned above: transportation (bus service into downtown), recreation (specifically fishing for salmon or crabbing around shorelines), technology (manufacturing components for cars) and even home improvement supplies (woodworking). In recent years there has been significant growth within the arts sector; new galleries have been opening up all over town as well as some very successful small Label artists who are quickly becoming known throughout the Northwest region! Overall though many aspects of our community remain much the same - great food options locally sourced ingredients cooked fresh daily + events happening every week kept us entertained!
