Port Angeles was founded in 1871 by Captain George Vancouver and his family. The city is named after the Strait of Juan de Fuca, which running through the city's center. The early settlers were fishermen who operating out of small craft on the Strait. In 1875, the first school in Port Angeles opened. In 1907, a new courthouse and jail were built in downtown Port Angeles. During World War II, Port Angeles served as a staging area for troops going to fight in Northwest Europe. In 1945, the last ship carrying goods from Seattle to Puget Sound arrived at anchor at Terminal Island before being decommissioned and sunk by the navy.
