During World War II, port workers helped build naval vessels at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and contribute to military campaigns throughout the Pacific Theater of Operations; many veteran sailors later moved to Port Angeles to live out their days there after discharge from service. Afterward, many businesses closed down or changed hands; but over time some core staples such as grocery stores and auto repair shops have continued to operate successfully unchanged since then In recent years, growth has been slow due to residential zoning laws that limit development near public transportation options like highways or shopping malls; however new developments are planned for areas around the old Navy Yard redevelopment project which will include an aquarium, Convention Center/theater complex and housing projects
