In 1851, entrepreneur George Vancouver set out from Neah Bay on Orcas Island with his brother John to find a new land route across Puget Sound to Asia through what is now Tacoma. He reached what is now Pasco Landing on Saturday Harbor after spending two weeks walking overland from his home at Point Defiance () near present-day Yakima Falls The first European sighting of what would become Pasco happened when Captain James Cook sighted Half Moon Island (), off shore from San Juan Islands during his third voyage around America (1793). Cook named it Islay after Imlay Beeching, Surveyor General for Canada during this era ashore at various points along North America's eastern seaboard including Stadtfelder Cove () off Prince Rupert Ferry Road (). It should be noted that due to confusion caused by multiple publications naming different islands - particularly during early 1800s - most modern historians recognize only Half Moon Island actually served as an island when Captain Cook sighted it; he simply mistook it for another Islay which he also charted during his 3rd voyage! [note: The correct spelling according to contemporary Admiralty records was "Half Moon"] owing to later maps being confused with neighboring Isle Of Wight... Christopher Bean website] Thereafter such vessels sailed past every day without encountering any resistance or incident until they finally met up with HMS Discovery [] northwest of Cape Disappointment (). [Note: Discovery did not actually reach Half Moon Isle until much later...] On 25th Dec 1795 while sailing southwestward around False CapeDouble-ended their course so they passed within three leaguesof us but saw no land nor Significationeither positive or negative [...] So we anchored about four miles southwardof where we Tosent last night.] [ captain James Cook's third visit & landfall northwest coastof false cape] In order continue exploring Puget Sound further north Capt Cook decided against landing again till he had more knowledge about this area because "...it may be several days yet before we shall come upon any thing worth seeing." The Pasco region of Washington was first settled by the local Native American people in the late 18th century. In 1792, the area became part of what is now Oregon Territory. The first white person to reside in Pasco County was James McDonald, who founded a small town on the site of present-day Tacoma in 1837. However, due to an embargo against British possessions during World War II, MacDonald's town only lasted until 1840. The first post office in Pasco County was established in 1847. By 1860, over 100 businesses had been operating in the county. In 1868, Alexander Graham Bell received his first telephone patent from Washington Territory and started working at his home near Tacoma. In 1890, Washburn College was founded in Tacoma and it would continue to be one of the most popular educational institutions throughout its history until it merged with Pacific University in 1997. In 1907, voters passed a resolution recognizing Puget Sound as a separate seashore within their statehood and enacting legislation establishing Shoreline Park along estuary shores east of Seattle. This park would become one of Asia's most popular tourist destinations for visitors interested in Mariners baseball and other sports events taking place on Bainbridge Island and Elliott Bay
