Pasco, Washington is a town in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. The population was 7,362 at the 2010 census. Pasco is part of the Tacoma–Hale area and is adjacent to Tacoma on the east and west sides. It is bordered by Poulsbo on the north, SeaTac on the east, Olympia on the south, and White Center on the west. The first people to live in what is now Pasco were two families of Chinook Indians who had been forced from their traditional home near Whatcom Mountain in 1853. They moved upriver to what is now Pasco Junction about 2 miles (3 km) southeast of where they established their homestead. In 1865 John Wesley Powell located a gold mine at an elevation of 6,000 feet (1,800 m) above sea level in present-day Pasco Creek Valley; this led to development of mining communities around it such as Goldendale and Polsonville. The discovery of substantial amounts of gold during Mining District 10's rush led to intensive exploration and development of resources throughout much of Western Washington beginning in 1872. By 1880 over 50% of all gold mined in Western Washington had been discovered in Puget Sound alone; production reached 500 metric tons/year by 1902. The industry declined after World War I but resumed after World War II with increased investment due to expanding demand for metals worldwide following World War II and technological advances including automobiles In 1920 Pacific Northwest Electric Railway began construction along State Route 9 between Goldendale and Olympia; this line became known as "the serendipitous route" because it followed an abandoned railroad bed that had been used by early settlers for transportation routes connecting different parts of the region. The original routing left Goldendale near Puget Sound while reaching Olympia at its eastern terminus via White Center before turning northwest towards SeaTac through Poulsbo before terminating at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
