The first European to visit what is now Pasco was Captain John Jacob Astor in 1834 when he and his group of fur traders explored Puget Sound from Olympia to Seward Strait. Astor's party landed at what is now Pasco Point on May 10, 1834 and named it after his voyage's captain, Nicholas Pasco. In 1851, gold was discovered near present-day Issaquah by James Wickersham in what would become part of king county. Mining operations were started soon afterwards and by 1865 over $2 million had been extracted from the local fieldwork including gold specimens lodged at various museums around the United States as well as Canada. The discovery led to increased development aroundIssaquah with several mills opening up along riverbankside streets such as Second Avenue which became known as "the Gold Rush Road". In 1865-1867 an additional 7 miles (13 km) of canal were completed connecting Issaquah with Puget Sound bringing transportation within a few miles of downtown Pasco for the first time ever; this opened up much more land for business development with new churches and hotels being built along Second Avenue between 20th Street SE and 25th Street SE. In 1907 lumbermens built Anacortes Canal Terminal just east of present day First Avenue NE serving both commercial shipping terminals handling finished goods destined for Everett or Tacoma while also exporting goods destined for China through another port about two hours away via ferries called Hingham during harvest season; this terminal remains in use today by Lumbermen's Terminal Company LLC which manages it behalf..
