Olympia, Washington is known as a center of astronomy and optics. The city was founded in 1853 by Gabriel García Márquez, who named it after the Greek goddess Olympia. Today, Olympus is home to three universities: the University of Puget Sound, Seattle Pacific University, and Western Washington University. In 1916, the United States Naval Observatory moved from Olympia to Arlington County, Virginia. The first scopes in America were built in Olympia by Dr. George Ellery Hale in 1878. He designed and built a telescope called the Hale Telescope at Mt. Rainier National Park. The first U.S.-made telescope was the Green Bank Telescope in 1982 located near Harrisonburg, Virginia. In 1967, Olympian Mayor David Ainsworth announced that he would make $6 million available for new scientific research facilities in Olympia over 10 years; this led tothe establishment of the Northwest Research Institute (NRI) which operates today’s science buildings on NW First Avenue SE in downtown Olympia- one of only two such institutions west of Chicago! The NRI also funded several large telescopes including the world’s largest ever made (Kepler), as well as important ground-based projects like Atmospheric Imaging Spectrometer Array (AISA) and High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HRISE). Today’s Olympic Stadium has been host to many events including both Olympic Games and Paralympic games; it is now home to both Seahawks football teams as well as various cultural events throughout the year.

Olympia, Washington is a city in the U.S. state of Washington. The population was 18,819 at the 2010 census and is the second most populous city in the state after Seattle. In 1851, Japanese American farmers and mechanics working for organized labor formed the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) with headquarters at 4170 2nd Avenue NE in Tacoma; they began agitation for land rights within miles of Seattle, which they felt were being taken away from them by white farmers. JACL members made contact with local Native Americans who had settled around Olympia before moving westward into what are now Spokane and Yakima counties; these interactions helped convince Ulysses S. Grant to provide financial aid for purchase of acreage from Chief Joseph Clarkbeck that would form Duwamish National Monument; this area includes parts of today's downtown Olympia. After Yamhill County was created from portions of Snohomish County on February 14, 1889,[2] part of Duwamish National Monument became portion of Thurston County on May 15th same year.[3] On October 16th 1893 – over 100 years after first settlement – voters approved creation of Thurston County by referendum[4][5] via proposition number 514/A (Prepared by Wm Fenton).[6][7][8][9] JACL activity continued unabated until November 11th 1949 when Executive Order 9066 banned all Japanese ancestry citizens from living within any “government boundaries” without special permission from above,[10] including those living within incorporated municipalities such as Tacoma or Everett.[11] In 1951 Japan America Citizens League disbanded because many people emigrated elsewhere during McCarthyism era

In 1838, the British scientist George Stephenson developed the locomotive engine and found out that he could make very large distances with his telescope by using the magnification power of his engine. This gave him the idea to build a large telescope called Manchester Observatory which was completed in 1839. In 1853, William Herschel built the Hubble Telescope which was originally designed for studying meteors and stars. It has now been used to study everything from galaxies to planets orbiting around other stars! In 1929, Max Planck invented quantum mechanics which allowed scientists to study objects that are not normally visible with traditional means like light or radiation. This helped us understand how particles work and how physical laws can be changed without changing underlying behavior! The town of Olympia began as a small community on the banks of the Columbia River in 1853. It grew rapidly after gold was discovered in nearby Multnomah County and people from all over arrived to prospect for ore and find new homes. In 1886, Olympia became an incorporated village with a post office and school. The first movie camera was made in Olympia in 1907 by photographer Harry Langdon and his partner Wernher von Braun. Aoplene Mining Company operated a large open-pit copper mine near downtown Olympia from 1912 until it closed in 1932; however, little copper ever came out of it owing to low grades and changes in weather patterns that made it difficult to extract valuable minerals. In 1916, city officials built the first municipally owned water tower; however, this structure ceased operation about 1930 because of obsolescence issues with newly designed water towers being built elsewhere at that time. In 1928, local residents organized into what became known as "The Homer Club" to resist annexation by Portland because they felt their political representation would be better protected if they remained independent. The club met monthly to discuss matters such as education, sanitation reform, etc., until 1935 when Portland annexed them without offering any concessions or compensations. In 1942 when World War II began most businesses closed down due to wartime rationing; however some residents continued operations until 1945 due to lack of other options available at that time. After the war ended there were several attempts by developers interested in building apartments or commercial properties near downtown Olympia but these never materialized because there was no market for such development within easy distance of the town center (about 4 miles). After many years of stagnation Downtown Olympia experienced another resurgence starting around 2000 when efforts began to revive abandoned shopping centers along SE Anacostia Street which had once been one of the largest concentrations of retail stores east of Interstate 5 and had been vacated due to gentrification rates moving away from areas like Pioneer Square & NE Salmon Hill during this period... These efforts eventually resulted in more than 50 storefronts being renovated/upgraded between 2001-2005 alone (& we’re only including those that have survived through move-out dates).
