From its incorporation until 1999, Olympia's government was controlled by a mayor and six-member City Council; however this system changed when Mayor Gary Locke assumed control from councilors Steve Novak and Bruce Harrell after they resigned due to opposition to his proposed plan to change zoning regulations within the city limits. On November 14th 2014 Locke announced he would not seek re-election after more than three years on office
After the gold rush of 1849, many new settlers arrived in Olympia. Some of these men and women formed a nucleus around which the town took shape. They built log cabins, cleared land, raised crops, and started businesses. In 1872, the first post office was established in Olympia. The town grew rapidly during this time as people came to enjoy its natural resources and its proximity to Puget Sound. By 1907, Olympia had a population of over 50 residents and was growing steadily. The city council began to take on more responsibility for local affairs and soon developed into an effective governing body. In 1912, Olympia became a state capital when Washington State was created from parts of Oregon and Alaska. This growth led to increased commercial activity in the town as well as an increase in housing options available. by 1920, Olympia had grown to over 100 residents and again flourished under its new government structure.
