It is the county seat of Thurston County and home to the Olympia Naval Air Station and Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. The name comes from Mount Olympus, which was located in what is now Olympia and had been used as a place to bury people since before there were towns in that area. Today's downtown has been built on land once occupied by two woolen mills which closed in 1902 and 1904 respectively. The first municipality formed in Tacoma County was called "Olympia" because it included much of what is now Olympia Township but did not include all of present-day Thurston County. The history of Olympia, Washington starts with the first settler in the area, John Jacob Astor. He founded a small community called "Olympia" on land he acquired from the U.S. government in 1855, and named it after his birthplace in Sweden. The town grew rapidly during the late 1850s and 1860s as settlers arrived from all over the United States to find cheap land to farm and build homes. In 1872, Olympia became an incorporated town under the name of Seattle. Olympia experienced rapid growth during World War I, when thousands of soldiers moved into the area to fight in battle. Many businesses were closed due to wartime shortages of food and housing, but Olympia nevertheless saw a surge in development activity that helped make her one of Seattle's most vibrant communities. After World War II ended, growth slowed as new families moved into town instead of moving out to farms or other urban areas; however, Olympia nonetheless continued to thrive for years as a bedroom community for Seattleites. In 1990, Olympia was renamed part of King County after its incorporation into county government; however, its economic prosperity declined over time and it abruptly lost its status as a major city by 2000.
