Olympia, Washington is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,859 at the 2010 census. The name Olympia comes from the Greek goddess Athena. The city was founded in 1851 by John Wesley Powell and named for him after his victory over the Indians at Lake Olympia on November 12 of that year. In 1896, it became the capital of Washington state as part of a move to centralize government under Governor Arthur Sewall. Olympia is located on the eastern rim of Puget Sound, bordered by Bellevue to the east and south and Issaquah to the north. It occupies a plateau area surrounded by low hills that are drained by several rivers: Olympic River to the north, Snohomish River to the east (partly through downtown), Tualatin River to the south (to Tukwila), Wenatchee River to the west (to Auburn) and Salmon Arm Canal across Puget Sound between Olympia and Seattle. Most of Olympia's surface is covered with rich black soils dating back more than 4 million years; these soils make up about one-seventh of all land in King County. The town began developing around its original location on high ground overlooking Puget Sound and was first called "Eagle Butte" because it had strategic advantages for military purposes due its height above water level when first surveyed for settlement in 1851. By 1870s most residents had moved away from Eagle Butte because it developed into an agricultural community too far from any marketable resources such as lumber or coalitions were being formed near Tacoma then available only along Elliott Bay Road where people could buy goods they couldn't produce themselves such as flour for their own kitchens or hides for clothing outfitting pioneer families with new technology like steamboats built by local entrepreneurs filtered down through markets in Tacoma before reaching them finally becoming quality finished products exported all over North America via railroad shipments starting with some early pioneers who took advantage of easy access inland transportation opportunities while others had less opportunity since they were located closer to sea or mountain ranges providing protection against inclement weather conditions which often interfered with growing crops during those times

In 1912, Olympia voters passed an ordinance annexing nearby Thurston County to make it easier for farmers to sell their products into Seattle proper without having to go through Olympia; Thurston County currently includes most of Sounders Stadiums neighbourhood northwest of downtown Seattle
