Soon after, people started using binoculars for hunting and fishing as well as astronomy because they were much easier and faster to use than telescopes at this time. The history of Olympia, Washington is a long and varied one. The city was founded in 1871 by John T. Bonney and my father, George Lincoln Bonney, as the town of Wenatchee on the Spokane River. In 1912, the city became an incorporated town and then a city in 1932. Today, Olympia is the seat of King County and has a population of over 201,000 residents. Olympia is located on the eastern edge of King County and bordered by Chelan County to the north and east; Klickitat County to the south; Wenatchee County to the west; and Cheney County to the northwest. The city was named for Olympian Games organizer James Hogg who arrived in 1872 from Scotland with his wife Annie McKay Hogg. The first permanent settler in Olympia was John Mapes who built a log cabin on what is now First Street in 1875. In 1909, Olympia became part of Washington State when it was created as part of federal lands that were sold to state governments under President William McKinley’s initiative known as “The Gadsden Purchase”. This purchase included all but 5 percent of western Washington which at that time comprised much of present-day King, Chelan, Klickitat, Snohomish, Thurston (now Pierce), Raspberry (now Wellesley) counties.
