Oak Harbor is a town in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. Oak Harbor's history dates back to 1859 when settlers erected a log cabin on what is now known as "The Point" near present-day downtown Oak Harbor. In 1870, the town was organized and named after Eastern Washington pioneer Colonel Augustus Leroy Nelson Oakman. The first post office in town opened in 1872. In 1903, the city of Seattle annexed portions of Kitsap County including Oak Harbor to form its new municipality. On July 15, 1907, Mayor John Halsey announced that the city would annex all of Kitsap County except for Tacoma and Eastsound if residents approved an referendum to this effect; however only about 60% of residents voted in favor of annexation which led toSeattle’s decision not to annex any more counties until 1948. In 1908, when Seattle's City Council adopted an ordinance allowing single family homes within blocks of each other (later renamed "Neighborhoods"),Oak Harbor became one of the first communities in America to receive such a privilege. This ordinance also created streets and sidewalks within neighborhoods and allowed for public access to all areas east of First Street between Third Avenue South and Fourth Avenue North). The prohibition industry rapidly grew during Prohibition with many businesses located along Third Ave., south down Pacific Way and west up Second Ave., so it wasn't until after repeal that these businesses could be closed without fear they would be torn down by law enforcement or developers looking for prime real estate
