Oak Harbor is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,463 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma Metropolitan Area. The first human settlement in what became Oak Harbor was by the tribe of Cascades on December 10, 1853. On July 3, 1861, a party of eighteen volunteers from Tacoma assisted in the Landing at Puget Sound for the intention of founding a town on sound land north of Tacoma just east and west of where today's Puget Sound Bridge spans Mare Island Strait. In 1865 local entrepreneur George Stephenson erected a sawmill and grist mill on mud flats at Mud Bayou. In 1875 he built another mill and store in present-day downtown Oak Harbor. The posts office opened its doors on December 5, 1886 as "Aurora". A post office called "Pinecrest" was established November 9th 1908 but closed due to lack of mail demand from residents living near Elliott Bay Naval Shipyard which had been newly constructed south of town along Lake Union Boulevard. In 1912 aluminum smelters were founded by two brothers named Edmondson and Alfred Olson in what would become downtown Oak Harbor; Olson also developed Hazel Dell into an agricultural center producing hay and apples for local markets while his brother ran one side operations outrigger canoes that ferried goods between I-5 and Puget Sound

Oak Harbor is a town in Pierce County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,554 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metropolitan area. The name "Oak Harbor" comes from the oak trees that line its streets. The town was founded in 1856 by George Wickersham and his wife Celia Wickersham as a post office near what is now Tacoma. In 1859, Jens Olsen started towingboats across Lake Washington from Olympia to Tacoma and he donated land for a dock on which boats could be unloaded and stored. This became the first commercial pier in Puget Sound and it remains today as one of the most important commercial docks in Western Washington. In 1865, John Noyes set up a sawmill on White River just east of present-day Oak Harbor. With this mill came new industry: logging began around this time, with lumber being transported overland to Oak Harbor by stagecoach or wagon trains hauled by horses and burros Pullman coaches pulled by mules or dogs teams when there were no railroads available. By 1870, many mills had been built along the river; Oak Harbor developed into one of the leading lumber towns in Northwest America due to its access to good timberlands and its location on navigable waterways. During World War II, Baytown Shipbuilding (later PT boat builder) located their production facility just north of present day Oak Harbor on Buckeye Creek within walking distance of both local businesses (such as Arliss Motors) as well as PT boat builders such as Baytown Shipbuilders Incorporated who produced thousands of Liberty Ships for US Navy combat duty during World War II In 1959, after years of discussion between Tacoma Mayor Artie Ahern and then Pierce County Executive Franklin Rainey Jr., it was decided that Oak Harbour would become an incorporated community under elected officials only with direct jurisdiction over public services like water supply & sewerage while Tacoma would remain unincorporated until 1975 when it too became an incorporated community with equal powers over public services
