Oak Harbor is a town in Pierce County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,591 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Oak Harbor was Lieutenant John Jacob Astor on July 3, 1836. He and his party were exploring the Puget Sound region when they came upon a small island in the harbor. Astor named it "Astoria" after his mother's home country of Greece. In 1839, Captain George Vancouver explored Puget Sound and came across Alaskan Malamute dog sledding during his trip from Asia to North America. His crew took some dogs for dinner and gave one to Captain Vancouver as a gift. This led to the name "Alaskan Malamute" being given to the Strait of Juan de Fuca by Vancouver in memory of these dogsledding excursions along that part of our coast.. Captain George Vancouver also sighted what is now called Mount Rainier while sailing through Puget Sound on his way to finding new landmass between Alaska and Siberia on October 26, 1792; he named this landmark Mount Baker because it resembled an immense baldACike or snowbank seen from below near where he anchored off Discovery Bay northwest of present-day Tacoma on November 10th (the day before Thanksgiving). On February 12th, 1848 Avis Johnson sailed into Oak Harbor harbor with her cargo of supplies bound for Sitka Alaska following her circumnavigation around Earth orbit around Cape Horn that year aboard HMS Beagle which had reached South America On April 20th she anchored in Sitka Harbor having accomplished 4666 miles round trip! The first American passenger steamship ever built! She carried about 100 passengers and their horses overland from Sitka Alaska to Milwaukee Wisconsin then upriver to Tacoma Washington finally reaching Oakland Harbor on May 25th 1850 making history as only ship ever authorized by Congress To carry American passengers entire round trip without using port facilities!

In recent years Oak Harbor has seen increased development with two large subdivisions being developed: One called "Olde Town" located east of I-5 and west of SR 516/US 26 while "New Town" located just north of I-5 along US 3rd Street between SR 520 and SR 525 sits atop an ancient lava field that has been used for farming since at least 1907 when Dutch farmers settled thereabouts based on rumors that ground water seeped out from beneath the island's surface It is said that early pioneers named Friday Island after their daughter Friday who ran away with a young man from her home near Olympia while her parents watched but no Indian ever discovered where she went or what happened to her; this story may have originated with European landing rights regulations which allowed only white men to explore adjacent lands so Friday Islanders could fish without fear of trespassing or theft by Native Americans
