Oak Harbor is a town in Pierce County, Washington, United States. The population was 7,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metropolitan area. The community is located on Puget Sound and has a humid continental climate (Köppen: Dfb), similar to that of Seattle. The first Europeans to visit what is now Oak Harbor were traders from Asia who came ashore in 1697 and landed on the site of present day Tacoma. They called it "Ai Kwai Fai" or "Island of Peace." The next year, Captain George Vancouver explored what is now Puget Sound and named it Albion after his home country, England. In 1792, Captain James Cook visited the area and named it HMS Beagle after his ship which had been lost off Japan four years earlier while exploring that coast. In 1841, pioneers arrived in this area with John Day's steamer Discovery when he founded Lakewood Ranch on land then used by the Native Americans for hunting grounds and rights to use waterbodies including current Olympia Creek. Today's downtown Oak Harbor was built as a result of these early years of development here in Oak Harbor. In 1907, local businessmen Samuel Morse and Harry Haldeman organized what became known as the Columbia Valley Grain Elevator Company which grew into one of history's most important agricultural companies with its headquarters located in today's downtown building still extant today! This company played an instrumental role in helping give rise to many family businesses that have continued on through successive generations - examples being Safeway Stores Inc., King & Yonge Clothing Store (later Macy's).. As America entered World War II production shifted from agriculture to munitions manufacturing during wartime; accordingly Oak Harbor saw increased activity around Pearl Harbor dockyards working alongside other towns across Puget Sound for naval vessels build under Naval Vessel Production Regulations set out by Admiral Kimmel during WW2! The town began as an unincorporated community on the shore of Lake Union in 1887 and was named for Agriculturalist George Oakhurst by his friend and neighbor Commodore John Denny. In 1907, Oak Harbor incorporated as a town under the name of Everett and had its first general election that year. In 1912, it changed its name to Oak Harbor after then-Governor Alonzo Hastings (D). The town has been located on the Pacific Ocean since it became a settlement in 1887. The first permanent settler arrived in 1892 when Capt. Elijah Pogue built a small cabin on what is now known as Point Cook Road about two miles east of present-day Oak Harbor Center. By 1897, there were over 20 families living in or near present-day Oak Harbor Center with a total population of 350 people. Development around Point Cook Road slowed until World War I when demand for naval shipbuilding increased during America's involvement in World War I In 1922, Congress passed Publish Lobbying Act which made it illegal for any person who was not registered with one of 17 lobbying organizations to make any representations directly or indirectly to members of Congress without prior written consent from their respective organization/s . This law severely limited public access to information about Capitol Hill politics and contributed to recent congressional investigations into corruption within both major political parties During WWI development around Point Cook Road picked up again until 1932 when construction stopped due to enterprize money raid by Japanese forces During WWII development around Point Cook Road stopped again because war disruption causedxpansion along US waterfront zigzagged
