Oak Harbor is a town in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The first white person to live in what is now Oak Harbor was Fenton Creswell in 1851. He and his wife came from Lansing, Michigan and he homesteaded land on the east side of Puget Sound. In 1865, J. Rolfe Sawyers built a sawmill on thesound for local lumber companies descended by settlers such as John Denny who had followed him north from Oregon during the gold rush of 1849-1855. Denny's company was eventually acquired by Seattle Timber & Milling Company which built an elevator system that transported logs upriver to its mills on Elliott Bay where they were cut into boards and other products including furniture and homes. In 1907 Oak Harbor became incorporated as a town with a population of 3,500 when it amalgamated with nearby SeaTac Townships (later Ronkonkoma). The mill closed in 1971 but remnants can still be seen today along Elliott Bay Road near Terminal Island Park which once served as the town center with an ISD schoolhouse, post office, library and several businesses including Fish Unlimited (now Safeway), IBM World Trade Center East Annex store and First American Bank building before being demolished in 2006 to make way for new development including Microsoft's Redmond campus which opened in 2007 Today Oak Harbor has become a popular tourist destination with many vacation homes available for rent or purchase . The town also offers amateur fishing opportunities both from shoreline access points along Elliot Bay Rd., as well as deeper water accessible spots off Point Juan de Fuca Boulevard . There are also several golf courses within walking distance of downtown . Oak Harbor, Washington was founded in 1853 by Captain John D. Rockefeller and his brothers. The city was named for the oak tree that stands outside of the original wharf. Oak Harbor was founded in 1857 by John P. Troup and his wife, Eliza. The town was named for the grove of oak trees that lined the banks of the river. In 1861, Oak Harbor became a county seat and was renamed Aberdeen. In 1906, Aberdeen merged with neighboring Everett to form what is now Tacoma.
