Oak Harbor is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 3,491 at the 2010 census. The community is located on Puget Sound west of Seattle and east of Tacoma. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma Metropolitan Area. The first permanent settler in Oak Harbor was George Stephenson, who arrived in 1881 with his family from Sunderland, England. He built a cabin on the site where he currently lives. A post office was established in 1886 and remained in operation until 1907. In 1911 the name changed to Oak Harbor Township due to its location on Puget Sound and it has remained that way since then. In 1933, Oak Harbor became an incorporated village when all of King County except for SeaTac annexed it as part of a larger municipality efforts called "New Kent". This move increased development near the waterfront as well as new housing developments near Interstate 5 which made life easier for workers commuting into Seattle or Tacoma. In 1978, after years of debate and planning by both local officials and developers, New Kent merged with neighboring SeaTac to form what is known today as the Tacoma metropolitan area
Oak Harbor was founded in 1853 by John H. Cook and his wife, Anna C. Cook. The town was named after a small cove on the sound where they first built their cabin. In 1907, the town of Oak Harbor merged with the village of Eastsound to form the larger Oak Harbor-Eastsound community.
